The Institute for Clinical and Economic Review is seeking input on non-drug topics they should study for 2020. An independent nonprofit research institute, ICER is the US leader in assessing the evidence on the effectiveness and value of drugs and other medical services. ICER’s reports and pricing benchmarks that represent a good value for consumers are used by many payers to keep healthcare affordable and foster innovation. ICER includes a great deal of patient input into every assessment and in choosing their topics. While ICER is best-known for reports on drug pricing, they have evaluated many non-drug treatments including non-drug interventions for chronic lower back paincommunity health workersprograms to integrate behavioral health into the primary care setting, and breast cancer screening.

Potential topics for 2020 include:

  • Apps for managing anxiety and/or depression
  • Apps for self-management of cancer care
  • Devices for obstructive sleep apnea
  • Devices for atrial fibrillation (potentially compared with dabigatran)
  • Lenses for cataracts
  • Colonoscopy versus non-invasive methods of colorectal cancer screening
  • Surgical interventions for benign prostatic hyperplasia
  • Healthy maternity programs
  • Medically tailored meals
  • Safe injection sites
  • Different versions of carotid artery surgery
  • Tympanostomy ear tubes

Comments on prioritizing those topics and suggestions for others are welcome. ICER will be accepted through December 13th. Click here for more information.
